5 best orthopaedic specialists in Newcastle for fast and safe fracture recovery
Few things hurt quite like a broken bone, and I’ve had my fair share over the years. No matter where it happened, the pain was intense, and my first instinct was always to see a specialist as soon as possible.
Orthopaedic specialists focus on bones, joints, and muscles. They can treat fractures and muscle injuries, though sometimes surgery is necessary.
With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of some of the best orthopaedic specialists in Newcastle. These are experts who can help injuries heal efficiently and safely.
How much is a consultation with an orthopaedic specialist in Newcastle?
A consultation with an orthopaedic specialist in Newcastle will cost around £100 to £300. Factors that will affect the price are insurance coverage, procedures done, and the complexity of each case.
1. Mr. Nezar Tumia

Contact Details: +44 191 212 5232
Operating Hours:
- Tuesday: 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Mr. Nezar Tumia is an experienced senior orthopaedic consultant surgeon, best suited for hip and knee surgery. His main clinic is at Nuffield Health, but he also has a private practice at Tyneside Surgical Services.
Impressively, he has over 30 years of experience and has performed over 3,000 primary hip surgeries and more than 400 partial knee replacements.
His credentials are amazing, having a Doctorate of Medicine from Aberdeen. He even underwent a prestigious fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto to improve his already incredible hip and knee reconstruction surgery.
He mainly offers hip resurfacing and total hip replacement. Both of these have high success rates, with many patients reporting being pain-free after surgery.
Mr. Nezar also conducts total and partial knee replacements, perfect for those struggling with osteoarthritis or chronic pain. Recovery can take up to 6-8 weeks, which is fairly short.
However, I wish he could be available on days other than Tuesday.
Mr. Tumia put me at ease with his professional yet friendly approach
“I’m eight weeks on from a total hip replacement carried out by Mr Tumia and his team. In all pre and post op consultations Mr Tumia put me at ease with his professional yet friendly approach, and the operation itself went without a hitch. I’m delighted with the outcome – I now have a trouble-free hip and am well on the way to recovering the mobility previously lost to arthritis. I’m extremely grateful to Mr Tumia, his team and the nursing and physio staff at the Nuffield for their welcome and care.”

Absolutely thrilled with the results
“I had a total hip replacement 7 weeks ago by Mr Tumia at the Nuffield hospital and am absolutely thrilled with the results. I am 84 years old and am now completely pain free and walking easier than for a long time without aids. Grateful thanks to all the team and staff for their care and attention and would highly recommend Mr Tumia.”

2. Mr. Rajesh Kakwani

Address: Clayton Rd, Jesmond
Contact Details: +44 191 293 4102
Operating Hours:
- Monday, Wednesday: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Mr. Rajesh Kakwani is an impressive consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle treatment. He works in several private and NHS-funded practices, such as Nuffield Health and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust.
He obtained his Master’s degree in Orthopaedics from the University of Mumbai and a Magister Chirurgiae (MCh) in Orthopaedics from the University of Liverpool.
His fellowship history is simply astounding. In 2011, he completed an AO Trauma Fellowship in Hannover, Germany. In 2014, he was awarded a British Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) Travelling Fellowship to the Sigvard Hansen Foot and Ankle Unit.
Mr. Rajesh’s great toe fusion and flat foot correction surgeries are both quick and painless. These have high success rates and typically have short recovery times, around 2 to 6 weeks.
However, a few clients have reported having difficulty booking an appointment with him due to his popularity.
Post-surgery care was equally efficient
“After efficient diagnosis, Mr Kakwani operated on my fractured ankle in July 2025 (plate and screws). The process from start to finish was clearly explained and Mr Kakwani was amiable and always had time to answer my questions. The surgery was a success. Post-surgery care was equally efficient. I would recommend Mr Kakwani to anyone requiring similar surgery.”

No pain whatsoever from the surgery
“Brilliant service from start to finish. First seen Dr Kawani in September 2024, in my first consultation he was able to diagnose my issue (insertional tendonitis) and this was confirmed a week later after X-rays and an MRI. The surgery could have been booked in a week later but due to my work commitments I had to put it off until December. The surgery only took 45mins and I stayed overnight at the Bupa hospital in Jesmond, the staff were brilliant and really attentive. After leaving I had the few months with the medi boot on but no pain whatsoever from the surgery. September 2025 I’m fully signed off by Dr Kakwani and pain free, I would thoroughly recommend him and Bupa for any surgery.”

3. Mr. David Elson (North East Knee Clinic)

Address: Clayton Rd, Jesmond
Contact Details: +44 191 743 7935
Operating Hours:
- Monday, Thursday: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Mr. David Elson is a specialist knee surgeon and has been an NHS consultant for 6 years. He specialises in joint-preserving knee surgery and performs approximately 250 knee operations each year.
Aside from North East Knee Clinic, he also works at Nuffield Health. However, consultations at Nuffield Health are limited to 3 patients every week.
Still, his training background is impressive, with fellowships in Cardiff and Hampshire. Additionally, because of his background, he’s served on the Quality Outcomes Committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.
I was astounded to learn that he was the driving force behind the establishment of the United Kingdom Knee Osteotomy Registry.
Patients feel safe because of Mr. Elson’s knee osteotomy since it’s a natural alternative to knee replacement surgery.
He can also perform really well with partial and full knee replacement. For those with chronic knee pain, patients found his cartilage restoration to be great at delaying or outright preventing arthritis.
Extremely helpful and reassuring
“My first visit with Mr Elson was extremely helpful and reassuring. I was really worried about having knee replacement surgery. He sent me for X-rays so he could see the extent of the problem. He went through everything with me from what the X-rays showed up to what would happen during surgery and afterwards. He wanted me to be sure I understood what would happen and that I definitely wanted to go ahead with the procedure.
After meeting with Mr Elson I was happy for him to go ahead with the operation. I had full confidence that I was in very skilled hands.
My follow up appointment with Mr Elson 6 weeks after my surgery went very well. He was very pleased with my progress. He gave me some new exercises to help continue the improvement. I have been discharged now and I am very grateful to Mr Elson and all the staff who looked after me so well.”

The procedure went smoothly, and recovery was quicker than I expected
“I recently had knee arthroscopy performed by Dr. David Elson. Dr. Elson was professional, clear, and reassuring, making the whole experience much easier. The procedure went smoothly, recovery was quicker than I expected, and best of all — I’m now able to run again. I’m grateful to Dr. Elson and his team, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone dealing with knee issues.”

4. Philip Dobson Knee & Hip Surgery

Address: Clayton Road, Jesmond
Contact Details: +44 7502 194902
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Philip Dobson is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon who graduated from Newcastle Medical School in 2007. Afterwards, he received specialist and fellow training at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre.
He currently works at two hospitals, namely Nuffield Health and the NHS Freeman Hospital.
Mr. Dobson’s use of robotics caught my eye since he performs surgeries using robotics. Patients report quick recovery times when undergoing his robotic-assisted surgery for joint and hip replacement.
Aside from that, he can perform knee replacement surgery and can even reconstruct ACL tears, greatly restoring function, even in the most injured patients.
However, his surgeries are a bit pricier than traditional ones. Nonetheless, the benefits outweigh the costs.
Another feature I love is that patients only need to stay in the hospital for 1 night before being discharged and healing at home.
A fabulous surgeon with an easy, relaxed manner
“A fabulous surgeon with an easy, relaxed manner who takes time to explain what he’s doing and reduces anxiety of patients under stressful circumstances. Saw my son very quickly and arranged surgery super-fast for a complex and traumatic knee injury. A guy whose people skills match his medical expertise. Highly, highly recommended.”

5. Mr Cyrus Jensen

Address: Clayton Rd, Jesmond
Contact Details: +44 191 249 9425
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Mr. Jensen is an incredible spinal surgeon who treats a variety of spinal pathologies from the neck to the coccyx. I love that he treats both children and adults, and he has an impeccable background to back it up.
He’s mainly an NHS doctor, working at the Wansbeck General Hospital and Hexham General Hospital. However, due to this, it can be difficult to get a schedule with him.
Nonetheless, it’s great that he trained in Leeds for an Advanced Spine Fellowship in 2013-2014. He has completed his training across Newcastle upon Tyne and the North East of England.
Mr. Jensen’s awards are also impressive, as he received the Young Investigator of the Year Award from Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) and the Best of the Best Research Prizes from the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).
His notable surgeries include lumbar decompression, which alleviates pain due to arthritis. Spinal fusion surgery, on the other hand, is used to treat fractures and instability effectively for all ages.
He was amazing before, during, and after surgery
