Extra services and rider support: We gave extra points to shops that offer bike fitting, custom builds, demo rides, trade-ins, or helpful aftercare.

Riding a bike always feels easy… until something starts clicking, slipping, or refusing to cooperate mid-ride. Even those used to outdoor activities like quad biking know how quickly a small issue can ruin the experience.

What looks like a minor problem can turn frustrating fast without the right tools or know-how. Luckily, visiting a reliable bike shop in Newcastle, UK, makes a big difference when it comes to keeping everything running smoothly.

So for those who want fewer interruptions and better rides, we rounded up shops that can handle repairs, upgrades, and everything in between.

1. Cycle Centre

Cycle Centre has been around since 1936. It’s a family-owned store in Byker, with a second branch in Ouseburn that blends a workshop with a cafe-style space.

They carry a full range of bikes, including road and e-bikes from brands like Trek and Brompton. The kids’ section alone displays over 50 bikes, which is rare locally and makes it easier to compare sizes in person.

The workshop is clearly the core of the business, handling repairs and full custom builds. Their technicians are certified for Brompton folding bikes and Bosch or Yamaha e-bike systems, so servicing doesn’t risk voiding warranties.

For buyers, there are practical extras like a free first service and a 10% accessory discount valid for a year. There’s also 0% finance and Cycle to Work scheme support, bringing savings of around 25% to 35% on eligible bikes.

One limitation here is that same-day repairs are not guaranteed, and that can disrupt plans if the bike is needed immediately.

Pros

  • 80+ years family-run
  • 50+ kids bikes
  • Custom builds
  • Free service + 10% discount

Cons

  • No same-day service

Superb all-round service

“Top class service, some of the best communication I have ever had with a cycle shop, had two Brompton’s serviced, and a rack and 44t cog fitted to one, superb all round service, no complaints whatsoever. Simply superb, they certainly know there way around Bromptons. Very very happy. Thanks to Rob and all the staff.”

Friendly and knowledgeable

“Have bought 2 bikes from Cycle Centre and would go nowhere else. Great range of bikes and accessories at the right price, and staff are also friendly and knowledgeable. I recently had a my first service and repair and the experience was great.”

2. Twelfth City Cyclery

Twelfth City Cyclery opened in 2020 and is run by Tom Hardy, a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in bike mechanics.

The focus here is on repairs and technical upgrades, with most work done by appointment. There’s also a free initial assessment, which lays out costs and options before anything is approved.

What stands out is the technical range, covering road and e-bikes, plus systems like Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS. They also handle wheel builds and internal hubs like Sturmey Archer, which not many shops take on.

But do note that getting there takes more planning since it’s outside central Newcastle, and it’s not ideal for quick drop-ins. Travel time can add friction, especially for riders relying on frequent servicing.

Then again, the level of detail in fitting sessions and repairs feels more precise than most local options. Around 85% of their workload comes from repeat customers, which says a lot. Honestly, this setup works better for riders chasing performance gains.

Pros

  • Service-first model
  • Free assessment
  • Advanced bike fitting
  • Advanced bike fitting

Cons

  • Advanced bike fitting

Friendly and reliable

“I was visiting the area and cycling to Hadrian’s Wall when I ran into trouble – I’d bought a faulty inner tube online, and when the inevitable puncture came, I had no backup. Thankfully, a friendly local gave me Tom’s number. He came out to me quickly and fixed the issue on the spot. It genuinely saved my day! Tom’s a friendly, reliable guy, and if I lived locally, he’d be my go-to for anything bike-related. Highly recommended.”

Friendly yet professional

“I booked a Head to Toe bike fit and the service Tom provided was fantastic. He’s friendly yet professional, very knowledgable on the mechanics of cycling despite not being a physio and I now feel a connection to my bike while riding which I didn’t think possible. The improvement in power transfer from what seems like a collection of minor adjustments cannot be overstated, and I recommend his services to anyone looking for a more comfortable and efficient bike setup.”

3. Start Fitness

Start Fitness has been operating since 1991 and functions more like a large-scale cycling retailer. Its Newcastle store is supported by a strong e-commerce system, so stock availability and product access feel far more extensive than most local options.

They list over 200 bikes online, covering road, mountain, and e-bike categories. Brands like Cannondale and Scott are available, making it easier to compare performance models side by side.

Pricing is where it gets interesting, with regular discounts across bikes and accessories. For example, helmets often drop from around £70 to about £60, and entry-level items like gloves sit between £17 and £26.

The shop also works as a full cycling setup hub, with footwear and components all in one place. Even their buying guides on their site help narrow choices, which actually makes a difference when sorting through that much stock.

Workshop services exist, but know that their setup leans heavily towards retail rather than detailed bike servicing work.

Pros

  • 200+ bikes available
  • Premium brands stocked
  • Frequent discounts
  • Full cycling gear range

Cons

  • Limited workshop focus

Fantastic professional company

“What a fantastic professional company. Ordered the bike on Thursday lunchtime and arrived next day. Packaging absolutely superb which, given no additional postage fee was charged despite the price of the bike being significantly cheaper than that offered by its competitors, was even more impressive. Would without question use this company again and recommend that others consider using them.”

Went above and beyond to help

“I visited this store in Newcastle today and was looking at electric mountain bikes, spoke with staff member named Alex who was extremely helpful, unbiased, knowledgeable and went above and beyond to help! Even down to allowing me to demo the bike on-site and running through all components. When I tested this bike I discovered that I would like a higher component set than the one on the bike, so Alex even helped me look up other bikes in their catalogue and matched one to my requirements, even going as far as helping me with sizing and printing out the exact model and sizing info for me! Customer service at it’s best! Extremely Impressed.”

4. theSHED

theSHED operates based in Gosforth with over 25 years of mechanical experience behind it. Services are appointment-only, which keeps the workflow controlled and avoids rushed repairs.

Service packages are clearly structured, starting at around £50 for a 33-point check and going up to about £180 for a 43-point full strip-down. There’s also a free assessment before any work begins, so costs and faults are outlined early.

On the downside, they don’t sell bikes or carry much retail stock, so this isn’t the place for browsing or buying. It’s strictly a servicing setup, which means riders needing new bikes will have to look elsewhere.

Nevertheless, their free collection and delivery within roughly 10 to 15 miles changes how the whole process works. Turnaround targets sit at about 24 hours, and the option for mobile fixes makes it easier when the bike cannot be transported.

Also, bike fitting is offered in tiers, starting at around £120 for basic positional adjustments and going up to about £200 for a full performance fit.

Pros

  • Free collection/delivery
  • 24-hour turnaround
  • £50–£180 service tiers
  • Free diagnostics

Cons

  • No bike sales

“Great work as always from Dave at theSHED. Gravel bike was like new following full service and outers, including some fab new tyres fitted. Dave talks through all the work in a clear and informative way and explains things to help us all become better cyclists. All extremely competitively priced too. Thanks!”

“Dave is a great guy who responded to all of my weird and wonderful questions promptly.  He was understanding and knowledgeable and did an amazing job on my bike.  No worries at all and even let me know I didn’t need the deluxe service which saved me cash very trustworthy guy. Business Hours:

Backyard Bike Shop runs as a custom-build workshop and cafe hybrid near the Quayside. The space itself uses repurposed shipping containers, giving it a distinct layout compared to standard retail shops.

Custom builds are the core service, with bikes assembled from scratch based on rider needs and budget. Components are selected individually, and builds often focus on performance setups rather than off-the-shelf models.

The workshop handles servicing and bike fitting, with direct access to the same mechanics doing the work. That setup makes it easier to discuss parts or upgrades without going through the sales staff.

Gravel riding is a clear focus, and builds are often designed for mixed terrain and longer distances. Alongside that, their cafe element works as a ride hub where people start or finish routes, adding a social layer to the experience.

However, opening days are limited to Tuesday through Friday, which restricts access for weekend riders.

Pros

  • Custom road/gravel builds
  • Direct mechanic access
  • Workshop-led service
  • Cafe ride hub

Cons

  • Available on weekdays only

Trendy and welcoming place

“Popped in for a bit of brunch on a blustery Saturday morning. First impressions were that it’s a very trendy and welcoming place and it’s really quirky as it’s within repurposed shipping containers! Staff were very friendly and attentive and explained the need for track and trace registration when entering. The coffee was excellent and the chai latte was delicious too. My partner and I had sausage and bacon baps respectively; the ingredients and presentation were top quality and tasted delicious. We were really happy with our experience and will definitely come back to visit again!”

Provided expert opinion and information

“I invested in a high end custom build from James and Nic. Absolutely top notch premium service from start to finish. Flexibilie around spec and providing expert opinion and information. I took my previous bike in and I’d also had a bike fit through their associate. James very carefully measured my bike and looked at the bike fit data, which gave me confidence the bike I was buying was suitable for my intended use and would fit well. In fact when I picked it up it was perfectly set up, I haven’t even tweaked anything since.  Great service, expensive but good value for money (passed on an unexpected frame discount to me). Couldn’t recommend more highly.”
