The 5 Best Muay Thai Gyms in Newcastle, UK to Learn Combat Sports

Coaching Pedigree: We looked closely at the fight experience and lineage of the head instructors. Gyms led by former champions or internationally certified coaches scored much higher on our list.

Training Atmosphere: A welcoming community is just as important as having access to heavy bags and mats. We favoured spots that actively support beginners and offer structured, ego-free environments.

Value for Money: Nobody wants to sign a restrictive contract on day one just to try a single class. We prioritised facilities offering free trials, cheap drop-ins, or flexible beginner starter packages.

Facility and Equipment: Stand-up striking requires plenty of decent space and the right pads to train safely. We checked if the gyms provided dedicated mat areas and accessible loaner gear for new starters.

Curriculum Structure: We picked clubs that feature clear, structured progression systems to help you map your goals. You want a disciplined method rather than randomly hitting a heavy bag.

If you’re looking to get into the best shape of your life but are tired of your personal trainer’s usual routine, you can master the art of eight limbs whilst gaining strength. You’ll sweat and unlock your inner fighter rather than focusing on cardio.

We looked for the best Muay Thai gyms in Newcastle, UK, to get you started. This martial art combines punches, kicks, elbows, and knees into one effective and rewarding striking discipline.

Read on and get straight to hitting the pads!

Contact: 0191 261 0001 | [email protected]

Hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, 5:00 PM – 7:15 PM
  • Tuesday, 6:00 PM – 8:45 PM
  • Thursday, 5:00 PM – 8:45 PM
  • Friday, 6:00 PM – 7:15 PM
  • Saturday, 11:00 AM – 2:20 PM

Team Phoenix Martial Arts blends a Muay Thai foundation with Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, creating a highly unique hybrid kickboxing system.

The coaching team is impressive, led by Head Coach Matthew Teasdale, who holds authentic international certifications.

Their 195 sqm training floor is equipped with everything you need, such as kettlebells, kick shields, and heavy bags. There’s even a community lounge and lending library that make the space feel like a relaxed club rather than an intimidating fight camp.

They even give newcomers a free seven-day trial pass, giving you a full week to test the waters with zero obligations.

But keep in mind, their blended striking approach dilutes pure Thai mechanics with other martial arts. So, if you want strictly traditional stadium rules and deep clinch work, this hybrid setup might feel a bit off.

Pros

  • Seven-day free trial pass
  • Blends Muay Thai with Jeet Kune Do
  • Equipped 195 sqm training area
  • Relaxed lounge and library area

Cons

  • Dilutes pure Thai mechanics

Life-changing martial arts and fitness training

I have trained with Matt and his team for over 3years. Mainly for physical and mental health benefits. He’s unknowingly helped me through alot. With excellent coaching in Muay Thai and Kali, but also fitness and frame of mind. I’ve met people from all over the country/world while training there. Trained with world champions. And Top coaches. I would advise anybody to give it a go. Make some good friends and get fitter.

Welcoming environment for quality Muay Thai

Went down to try the place out this week. I’ve struggled to find somewhere that does Muay Thai that isn’t a ‘flash-in-the-pan’ experience with dodgy gyms, flaky instructors, or an atmosphere that feels distinctly unsafe.

Note i’ve been doing MA for 12 years at the time of writing –  but its always a big step to go somewhere new, train with people you have never trained with before, and intrinsically put a level of trust in them.

I ended up having a great time.

Fantastic classes and staff for all ages

Absolutely amazing place, great staff and fantastic classes. I’ve trained under John in both Boxing and Kickboxing. My daughter also attends the children’s MMA, Kickboxing and Self-Defence classes. We both love it and highly recommend.

Expert personal training and technique focus

Last week, I had a kickboxing PT with John for the first time (I’m not from around here).

Very quickly, he assessed what level I was at and adapted.

Lots of focus on techniques, explaining (new) things. You can tell he’s very experienced.

He makes you feel confident about what you’re doing, which is great.

If I’m ever in the area again, I’ll definitely come back!

Universal Martial Arts makes getting into striking incredibly easy because you learn directly from a roster of seasoned champions. Their team includes an active fighter holding British and international titles.

Their curriculum covers the eight limbs of traditional Muay Thai, so you train thoroughly across punches, elbows, knees, and the clinch.

Beginners can start training straight away in casual sportswear because the club doesn’t require you to buy expensive gear upfront.

Parents will also appreciate that every youth instructor is Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked for safety.

We appreciate their one-week free trial so you can test the waters first. Plus, they provide affordable £5 adult drop-in rates.

Unfortunately, live sparring access is tightly gated behind an invitation from the coaching team, so you can’t just jump into the ring on day one.

Pros

  • Coaches are active competitors and champions
  • No expensive gear needed upfront
  • Free one-week trial
  • Affordable £5 adult drop-in rates

Cons

  • Sparring is strictly invitation-only

Great skill building and supportive environment

My son started here a few years back now, since joining he has come on leaps and bounds in skill and resilience. The coaches are spot on and there is a lot to do boxing, points karate, kick boxing , mma, Muay Thai. Staff are great and good environment. Reasonable price – paying monthly is the best as you get the best deals – but honestly this place is large with good parking and like I said couldn’t recommend this place enough.. classes for all levels 👊

Encouraging Muay Thai classes for beginners

Absolutely fantastic! Taking beginners Muay Thai boxing classes. Its made my fitness steadily increase and I’m grateful for that! The instructor, Lewis Keen is very tolerant of my sloppy fitness and appalling hand eye coordination, so loads of motivation and reiteration without the slightest hint of annoyance. Classes have good mix of students and it a very friendly and positive environment. 💪💪💪💪

Northern Kings Gym stands out with their elite championship heritage led by decorated North East fighter Craig Jose.

We like their brand-new facility, which has space for Thai boxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under one roof. There’s a convenient on-site NK Armoury for grabbing quick training gear.

You get a tonne of value out of their flexible private coaching, which lets you split the hourly rate with up to three mates.

We appreciate their mobile app for handling all your bookings on the fly. However, you can only book classes up to two weeks in advance, which makes it super frustrating if you like mapping out your workout schedule way ahead.

  • Head coach is a decorated fighter
  • On-site gear shop
  • Split-cost personal training
  • Mobile app for easy booking

Cons

  • 1 to 2 weeks of planning needed
