Train like a star at these 5 best singing lesson centres in Newcastle

Qualifications and vocal training background: We prioritised vocal coaches with recognised music qualifications or formal training in voice, performance, or music education.

Teaching experience and specialisation: We looked at how long each coach has been teaching and whether they specialise in styles such as pop, musical theatre, or rock.

Lesson fees and value for money: We compared rates across Newcastle and assessed whether the pricing reflects the facilities, lesson length, and level of personal attention provided.

Lesson structure and personalisation: We favoured tutors who tailor sessions to individual goals rather than offering a one-size-fits-all format.

Performance opportunities and progression: We gave extra consideration to schools and coaches who offer graded exam preparation or recording opportunities.

Location and accessibility in Newcastle: We assessed how convenient each option is within Newcastle, including proximity to the city centre and ease of booking.

We used to think singing lessons were only for people who casually hit high notes without fear. In our minds, you were either born with “the voice” or you were destined to lip-sync forever, maybe only brave enough for open mic nights at local music venues.

Then we recorded ourselves on a random evening and realised that enthusiasm does not equal technique. Our breathing was chaotic, and it became obvious that random YouTube tutorials were not the same as proper tutoring.

Now we get why structured training matters. Singing lessons in Newcastle build control and confidence. Here, we rounded up options that can genuinely help turn nervous singers into voices that can hold a note.

How much does a singing lesson cost in Newcastle?

A singing lesson in Newcastle typically costs between £25 and £45 per session. However, the total price depends on the lesson length and whether it’s one-to-one or group-based.

Enjoyable and informative

“I couldn’t recommend Subwaves more in providing great music lessons. My weekly piano lessons with Mary have really helped my progress and her knowledge is second-to-none. She makes each lesson enjoyable and informative. I always feel as if I leave her lessons inspired to play which is something that has transformed my own practice. Jamie is equally as fantastic and will often check in on you to make sure you are happy. Thank you both!”

With support and positive energy

“I spent the first 50 years of my life believing that I couldn’t sing and so didn’t even try, but then I came across Subwaves and met Jamie. One of the first things Jamie said was that my voice was my unique fingerprint, and I didn’t need to feel insecure about that – it was mine to own. That was 6 months ago and I have gone from strength to strength, learning and developing with the support an positive energy that Jamie provides, I now have the confidence to sing as part of a choir and I continue to grow. I would recommend Subwaves and Jamie’s tutoring skills no matter your level of experience or confidence. Thank you so much Jamie – I could not have started this amazing journey without you!!”

Fantastic vocal coach

“Rachel is a fantastic Vocal Coach. My daughter has had weekly singing lessons with her for a year now and has grown so much as a performer both in her ability and her confidence. My daughter also loves the lessons as Rachel is such a lovely person and gets to know people as well as teaching them. My daughter is always so happy at the end of her lesson and cannot stop singing. Rachel also goes over and above to help her with finding music sheets and fitting her in for extra audition prep. I cannot recommend her enough.”

Approachable and highly effective

Northern Music Centre has been running since September 1996, so they’ve delivered over 25 years of continuous music tuition in Newcastle. The centre is based in Heaton and operates 7 teaching studios, with more than 450 students attending weekly.

All singing lessons are structured as one-to-one sessions, usually 30 minutes per week, and billed in blocks of four. We like that fees are £18, with a one-off £5 registration fee.

And for us, that 30-minute slot can feel tight for advanced singers working on technique and repertoire. But on the positive side, longer sessions are available, but they need a separate booking and come at a higher cost.

The teaching team includes Jenny Moore, Richard Judson, and Lydia Roy. Each covering areas like contemporary vocals, classical technique, and ABRSM or LCM exam preparation.

This place is also an ABRSM and Trinity exam centre, so graded exams can be arranged directly in-house. With over 22,000 lessons delivered historically, this is really for singers who want real results.

Pros

  • 25+ years established
  • Structured block billing
  • Specialist vocal team with credentials
  • Trinity exam centre in-house

Cons

  • Tight weekly session

Little Beethovens Music School is based at 16 Benton Road, and runs Monday to Sunday. Singing is part of a wider curriculum that includes piano, guitar, and music theory.

It’s great that singing lessons are delivered as small-group classes for ages 7 to 15, with a maximum of 5 students per session. Each class runs for 30 minutes and is booked as a recurring weekly slot, paid monthly by standing order.

The fee is £12 per 30-minute class, plus a one-off £10 registration fee on enrolment. Compared with private 1-to-1 lessons in Newcastle that often start at £20 or more, this pricing feels accessible for families managing weekly activities.

We value that teachers hold music degrees or Associate Board qualifications and are DBS checked, which adds a clear safeguarding standard.

Lessons focus on pitch control, vocal development, and confidence. Aside from that, students typically have an annual performance for their family.

On the flip side, singing classes are limited to ages 7–15, so adults will need to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Transparent pricing model
  • Monthly standing order structure
  • Qualified, DBS-checked teachers
  • Annual performance opportunity

Cons

  • Singing lessons limited to ages 7–15

I would recommend Little Beethovens to anyone

“My daughter began piano lessons here when she was 4yrs old and absolutely loves it! She has had a couple of teachers due to changes in our own schedule and both were very good with her. They work at your pace and are very patient. Some weeks my daughter is not in the mindset and they alter the lesson so she does not realise she is learning where playing games or colouring in theory sheets. I would recommend Little Beethovens to anyone who wishes to learn the piano (young or old) and indeed have told many people about it.”

Great place to learn

“Amanda has a talent to get the best out of her students and I have improved in leaps and bounds under her guidance, from a complete adult novice to someone who is preparing to take their first ABRSM exams. Amanda has made me feel welcome and at ease from the very first lesson. She has helped me to focus on areas of my technique that need improvement with the right amount of push to get the best out of me. Little Beethoven’s is a great place to learn and I cannot recommend Amanda highly enough as a teacher.”
