Dance City has been around since 1991. The building is a purpose-built dance house in central Newcastle, not a shared gym. It runs over 65 classes weekly across more than 40 styles.

Classes range from ballet and contemporary to breakdance and Pilates, with sessions starting at about £8 for drop-ins. There are also formal pathways like BTEC and MA dance programmes, so it works for both casual learners and serious trainees.

Inside, you’re dealing with multiple professional studios under one roof, all designed for proper flooring and rehearsal space. The setup includes a theatre, so training and live performances happen in the same place, which is not something most studios offer.

There’s also a strong community angle with 200+ students in daily programmes and inclusive classes for toddlers, adults, and even “bumps to babies.” Accessibility is well thought out, too, with lifts and adapted changing areas across the building.

On top of that, there’s an on-site cafe called Seven Bridges, which adds a social layer between classes. Pricing, however, sits higher than many local studios.

Pros

  • Purpose-built dance facility
  • Offers BTEC + MA courses
  • In-house theatre performances
  • On-site cafe

Cons

  • High pricing

Teachers are exceptional

“I started attending classes at Dance City in September 2024 and it has honestly changed my life!  The staff are so friendly and the teachers are exceptional (particular shout out to Coco – Salsa, Amy – ballet and Caroline and Gareth – ballroom!). I love the variety of dance classes available and the fact that you can book just one class to try it, rather than having to commit for a full term.  This is such a special facility/organisation and I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to learn to dance here.”

Friendly staff

“I was unaware of this theatre until very recently when I attended the Kate Butch show.  The performance space is well designed with an excellent rake and lots of legroom.  Friendly staff in the box office and the café.  Plenty of room to sit in the foyer whilst waiting for the show to begin.”

Dudman Academy has been operating since around 2017 as a family-run studio in Fenham. It offers classes for ages 2.5 years through to adults, with sessions led by qualified instructors, including a former British Champion.

Training leans heavily into Ballroom and Latin, with students competing locally and some reaching Team GB level. However, for us, this focus limits options for those aiming purely for contemporary or urban styles.

Even so, the studio uses private dance spaces fitted with sprung flooring, mirrors, and ballet barres for proper technique work. Students also follow the UKA syllabus, and the academy reports a 100% exam pass rate, which shows structured progression.

Beyond weekly classes, students perform in theatre shows and participate in competitions, giving them real stage experience. Some have gone on to study at schools such as Italia Conti and Mountview, positioning the academy as a stepping stone toward professional training.

There’s also a mix of extras such as wedding choreography, K-pop workshops at around £16, and even a linked singing academy.

Pros

  • Family-run with pro instructors
  • Ballroom & Latin focus
  • Sprung-floor studios
  • 100% pass rate
  • Performance opportunities

Cons

  • Limited style range

Incredibly welcoming

“My daughter joined Dudman Academy earlier this year, and I have been amazed by her growth and development. Her dancing has gone from strength to strength, but most importantly, her confidence has flourished. Lee, in particular, has gone above and beyond to nurture and support my daughter in a way that truly suits her, taking the time to understand her as an individual. Natasha, the teaching staff, parents, and students have all been incredibly welcoming, making us feel part of the group from the very beginning. It’s clear that the environment the children are taught in is one that promotes kindness, encouragement, and support. Thank you for everything you have done for Sophia in 2025.”

The quality of teaching is first-class

“My daughter has been at Dudmans for almost 2 years, really wish we had found them from the start. An amazing dance school, ran by such a lovely, dedicated family. They can’t do enough for their students, the quality of teaching is first class and they also have a great understanding of teaching, which I find really important as not everyone learns things the same way. They strive to get the best out of their students, whilst always having students best interests at heart. Can’t recommend them highly enough!”

Newcastle Dance Centre has been operating since 1931. It’s a family-run academy on Grainger Park Road, offering classes from age three to adults under recognised UKA and IDTA exam boards.

Classes cover ballet and modern, alongside ballroom and musical theatre, all built into a clear syllabus. Pricing is quite accessible too, with children’s classes around £3.75 per 30 minutes and adult sessions about £8.10 per hour.

There’s a full progression system from toddler classes to senior levels, including a “Little Teddy” programme designed for early training. Class sizes stay controlled, and extra instructors step in when needed, so corrections and technique don’t get rushed.

Students also get performance exposure through links with Encore Dance Entertainment, plus opportunities in competitions and events. There are options for private lessons and even pathways into dance colleges or teaching qualifications.

One drawback is that the location is outside the city centre, which adds travel time and makes it less convenient for short visits or quick drop-ins.

Pros

  • Over 30 years in the business
  • UKA & IDTA training
  • Multi-style syllabus
  • Affordable pricing

Cons

  • Located outside the city centre

Super efficient and helpful

“My little girl had her 4th birthday party at Newcastle Dance Centre today – it was fabulous! Hayley organised the whole thing and was super efficient and helpful, Gemma choreographed the day itself and she was amazing! Bloss was made to feel so special from the moment she arrived and Gemma had bags of enthusiasm and patience. We also had a visit from Ariel who was fantastic! The venue was spacious, clean and exactly what we needed.. Thank you NDC for making Blossom’s birthday so special!”

Professional and encouraging

“My daughter started dance classes with NDC last year and is absolutely loving it.  She just performed in her first recital, her teachers were able to calm her from a panic attack and she danced beautifully. I couldn’t recommend Newcastle Dance Centre more, the teachers are lovely, professional and encouraging. My boys can’t wait to start in September.”

Northern Pole Dance runs from Carliol Studios in the city centre, with classes scheduled on most days. Booking is handled online, and sessions are prepaid through passes or memberships, with single classes starting at about £12 to £14.

The studio is fully fitted with eight X-Poles in both 40mm and 45mm sizes, supporting static and spinning training. Each student gets their own pole during class, which speeds up practice time and reduces waiting between sets.

Training goes beyond pole, with aerial hoop and flexibility classes included in the schedule. Just note that traditional dance styles like ballet or jazz are not offered, limiting options if you want a broader dance foundation.

Nonetheless, classes follow a level system from beginner to advanced, with added conditioning drills for strength and grip. There are also separate spaces for pole and aerial work, which helps with safety and proper equipment setup.

Also, their pricing sits mid-range, with class passes around £78 to £96 and monthly options near £98 for multiple sessions.

Pros

  • Central location
  • 8 X-Poles setup
  • Aerial classes included
  • Level-based training

Cons

  • No traditional styles

Instructors are so encouraging

“A lovely and encouraging studio that offers both pole classes and additional training to further improve your ability. The instructors are so encouraging and welcoming you don’t need to worry if you haven’t been before, you’ll be made to feel right at home and before you know it, you’ll be learning and improving on skills you never knew you had! I hated exercise until I started Sisi’s classes 5 years ago and now I never want to miss them. Truly transformative in body and mind.”

Instructors are friendly and supportive

“Sisi and her team are magnificent. Been going to Northern Pole Dance’s Pole and Aerial classes for 4 years. Recently tried aerial chains with Emily and it’s so much fun. The class sizes are perfect, the place is clean and the instructors are friendly and supportive. Couldn’t ask for a better place to train.”

5. Boogie Roo’s Dance Academy

Boogie Roo’s started teaching around 2015 and focuses on children from 18 months up to about 14 years old. Classes follow a “fun theatre” format, combining dance, singing, and acting in one structured session.

Sessions run across schools and community venues rather than a single studio, which changes how classes are delivered. Pricing is term-based, with ballet classes around £33 to £38.50 and trial sessions offered at a reduced rate.

Lessons use themed formats like animals or stories, so movement is tied to narrative rather than repetition drills. There’s also a clear early-years structure, with toddler classes focusing on coordination and sensory play.

Students take part in end-of-term performances and short shows, which introduce stage exposure early on. Plus, extras like dance parties and musical theatre events add practical use beyond weekly classes.

The setup feels engaging for younger kids, especially with the mix of acting and music in one class. On the downside, the age cap limits progression, so older teens or adults won’t find long-term training options here.

Pros

  • Dance, singing, acting mix
  • Multiple class venues
  • Regular performances
  • Affordable trials

Cons

  • Child-focused only
