Perfect your swing with these 5 best golf coaches in Newcastle

PGA qualifications and certifications: We prioritised golf coaches who hold recognised PGA qualifications or accredited coaching certifications.

Coaching experience and player development: We examined how many years each coach has taught and the types of golfers they typically work with.

Lesson fees and value for money: We compared standard lesson rates across Newcastle and assessed what is actually included in that fee.

Facilities and technology: We gave preference to coaches who use modern tools such as TrackMan or other launch monitors, alongside strong short-game and on-course training facilities.

Flexibility, location, and accessibility: We assessed how easy it is to book lessons, the availability of evening or weekend slots, and the convenience of each venue.

Additional coaching support: We valued coaches who go beyond basic swing mechanics by offering structured programmes, junior academies, or progress tracking.

We used to think golf was just slow walking and polite clapping at fancy golf courses. Then we tried playing 18 holes without training and discovered muscles we didn’t know existed, especially in the lower back and wrists.

Watching a session with a golf coach in Newcastle completely changed how we saw the game. Grip pressure, stance alignment, swing tempo—apparently, slicing the ball into oblivion is not “bad luck,” it’s bad mechanics, whether you’re on championship fairways or casual mini golf spots.

After enough lost balls and wounded pride, we figured it made sense to compile a list for anyone who wants real improvement without the embarrassment.

How much does a golf coach charge in Newcastle?

A golf coach in Newcastle typically charges between £30 and £60 per session. This depends on the coach’s experience, PGA qualifications, and whether technology is included.

Newcastle Racecourse runs its golf coaching at High Gosforth Park. Lessons are delivered by PGA-qualified professionals and follow structured pathways rather than casual range sessions.

Clear pricing is published online, which makes planning easy. A 30-minute lesson costs £25, 45 minutes is £35, and a 90-minute on-course lesson is £75.

Plus, programmes are properly mapped out. The Junior Academy runs in 10-week blocks for £90; the Ladies Academy includes a six-month winter membership; and the three-month Get into Golf course moves beginners from the range to real play.

Additionally, facilities back this up. There’s a 28-bay floodlit range with Srixon balls, Toptracer in 10 bays, and video swing analysis sessions with before-and-after playback.

Sessions can move from the range to the 18-hole course, helping build confidence quickly. Just note that coaching is not included in membership, so every programme or lesson is an additional cost.

Pros

  • Published lesson pricing
  • Structured programmes
  • With a 28-bay floodlit range
  • Video swing analysis with playback
  • On-course 90-minute playing lessons

Cons

  • Coaching fees are separate from membership

Entry was quick

“Living North Christmas event , well organised even the parking guides in the rain with the car park places swamped. Entry was quick and the layout much better than years ago (just tables hardly separated). Great choice with local and national produce in one place.”

Sharpley Golf operates from Seaton in County Durham, combining an 18-hole course with a 14-bay TrackMan driving range.

Coaching is led by former European Tour player Graeme Storm and PGA professional David Howdon, who brings over 50 years of teaching experience.

Sessions are built around TrackMan radar data that measure ball speed and club path. The facility also includes a floodlit range open seven days a week and an indoor TrackMan virtual golf studio.

However, coaching prices are not published online, so you need to email or contact the coaches directly to get rates.

Even so, we appreciate that lessons can extend beyond the bay, using short-game areas and on-course play to apply technical changes.

Their virtual golf sessions allow strategy work and pressure practice, which adds another layer to the coaching model. After spending time in that environment, the blend of tour insight and hard data feels properly high-performance.

Pros

  • Coaching with over 50 years of PGA experience
  • 14-bay TrackMan range with radar data
  • Has an indoor virtual golf studio
  • On-course and short-game integration

Cons

  • No published coaching prices online

Friendly staff

“Played for the first time today, what a course, really enjoyed it, great layout and interesting holes, lots of tiered greens which were amazing.  Really friendly staff in the bar and great cheese pastie ! So much so I’m interested in becoming a member.  With all the rain we’ve had this week this was the only course open, testament to the greens keepers 🫡”

The staff were so nice and friendly

“Had a great day playing a seniors open. We had a coffee and a bacon sandwich, with loads of bacon in. The staff were so nice and friendly.  We started the round, and the course was in great condition considering the amount of rain we’ve had. Thoroughly enjoyed it and finished with a pint as usual.  All in all, it was a fantastic day. I would highly recommend a trip to Sharpley.”

George Washington Golf Course sits within the Mercure Newcastle George Washington Hotel Golf & Spa. Coaching is led by resident PGA professional JJ Vallely, who has over 18 years of experience and around 16 years with England Golf.

Lessons are available to both members and visitors, which removes the need for club membership. We love that the coaching formats include one-to-one sessions, themed group clinics in summer, and a growing junior academy.

Additionally, facilities support the programme properly. There’s a 16-bay floodlit Toptracer range, plus short-game and putting areas, all linked to a par-73 course measuring around 6,620 yards.

One thing to consider is that sessions take place on shared practice areas, so you may be coaching alongside other range users.

More than that, from spending time there, the England Golf background stands out immediately. It feels development-driven and credible, especially for juniors or competitive players.

Pros

  • Lead coach has 18+ years of experience
  • Open to members and visitors
  • Junior academy and themed clinics
  • With par-73, 6,620-yard course

Cons

  • Coaching delivered in shared practice areas

Great golfing experience

“This is my favourite 18 hole course thats local to Durham. (so far!) I’ve been twice, both on a Sunday and paid £20 and then for some unknown reason £27. The staff are brilliant and the course offers a great golfing experience. You can really let rip with your driver on this course! Loads of parking and excellent facilities with a nice bar area for afterwards. The holes are very well kept which you would expect from a championship course. Something unique is the 10th hole where you are barred from using woods due to local housing. This is monitored by CCTV apparently. I can assure you I could break a window with a putter shot!! Big fan of this course and would recommend a visit.”

– Alec Mav, Google Review

Amazing facilities

“My husband and I had an amazing time at the golf course recently – the staff are very friendly and helpful and the course itself is great! Amazing facilities include top tracer driving range and halfway house – the perfect pit stop for a drink and a quick eat! We will definitely be returning to this course.”

Scratch Golf Studio is based in the Jarrow/South Shields area and is run by PGA professional Jack Hayward. Coaching is built around TrackMan data, structured programmes, and clear goal setting.

Lessons take place in a fully indoor setup using TrackMan for launch, speed, and club data. And because it’s mainly indoors, players who prefer outdoor range coaching may find the environment less natural.

Nonetheless, each session includes a video recording, and players receive 24/7 access to feedback through the Skillest app.

Their TrackMan data and session footage are stored, so progress can be measured over time instead of guessed.

Plus, pricing is clearly structured, starting with a £30 introductory 60-minute session. There are monthly plans at £55 or £110, and a 10-lesson package at £500.

A truly standout here is the 9-hole on-course playing lesson at £150, delivered at local courses with strategy and shot analysis. That mix of video and real-play feedback feels serious and more like a performance academy than a basic lesson setup.

Pros

  • PGA professional coach
  • Indoor TrackMan with full data metrics
  • Video recording + Skillest 24/7 support
  • Clear transparent pricing

Cons

  • Primarily an indoor coaching environment

Quickly assessed everything

“I went to Jack on a recommendation and showed him what I felt were the issues in my swing. He quickly assessed everything, made a few simple adjustments, and gave me easy-to-replicate drills that made a real difference. If you’re looking for a coach who can simplify your swing and help you play better golf, Jack is your man!”

– Adam Smith, Google Review

The studio itself is great

“After 10+ years of not playing golf I went for a lesson and have become obsessed! We’ve been Working on adjusting some elements in my swing and instantly I noticed a big improvement in control and distance after just one lesson! Jack has been great, welcoming and very knowledgeable. The studio itself is great and there’s plenty of information to really understand your swing/data. Would totally recommend Jack and his studio!”

City of Newcastle Golf Club, founded in 1891 and based in Gosforth, runs its coaching under PGA professional Steve McKenna. He also coaches at the Northumberland county level, which adds a competitive pathway element to regular club lessons.

The club offers a structured 5-week “Get into Golf” programme that covers driving, pitching, and putting in sequence. It feels organised, especially for beginners who want clear weekly progression.

We like that the lesson formats include one-to-one sessions and small-group coaching for 3 to 8 players. There is also a 3-year Junior Academy pathway focused on developing hand skills and competitive play.

In fact, their Junior group coaching stands out at £5 per session on the second Saturday of every month for ages 7–16, which is unusually affordable in Newcastle.

Their video analysis and G.A.S.P computer technology are available on request for technical swing breakdown. Just note that all coaching uses full-swing tech by default, as these tools aren’t included as a standard part of every session.

Pros

  • PGA coach available
  • Structured programmes
  • Offers Junior Academy pathway
  • Video + G.A.S.P tech available on request

Cons

  • Swing technology is not included as standard in all lessons

Brilliant hospitality

“If you’re looking for a Great Venue, brilliant hospitality, lovely atmosphere and even better food, you will struggle to find a better place to go. Catered for a sumptuous buffet for over 80 guests without a single hitch. Organized the brilliant Baldy Holly Band too. Perfect night for all of my guests so couldn’t be happier”

– James Screen, Google Review

Staff were great

“Played our latest golf society competition here today and have to say the course set up (tight) greens (fast and in great condition) was fantastic. Luckily the weather was kind to us and the wind was just breezy in places. The staff were great and the bacon sandwich was lovely. Unfortunately my golf was not great today but still enjoyed the course and hope to return in the near future. Highly recommend a visit.”
