5 Best Pharmacies in Newcastle for Fast, Friendly Care

Prescription management and turnaround: I looked for pharmacies that speed up repeats with text alerts, apps or home delivery. Waiting days for a routine tablet eats into your week.

Clinical and private consultations: I checked which branches offer walk-in advice, blood pressure checks and private treatments. A pharmacist who treats minor illnesses on the spot saves you a long wait.

Travel health and vaccinations: I compared which chemists stock travel vaccines and altitude treatments. That saves you from booking jabs weeks ahead through a surgery.

Caregiver and accessibility support: I checked opening hours, location and whether each chemist packs daily pouches or delivers. This matters when you manage medicines for an older relative.

Calling your GP surgery at 8:00 AM, waiting forty minutes and hearing every slot is gone is maddening. A slow queue at a huge high-street chemist with a pounding headache isn’t much better.

A good local pharmacy can fill that gap, but they don’t all offer the same help. So I compared providers across the city on clinical services, opening hours and delivery terms.

If you need a repeat prescription sorted or quick advice for a sudden rash, here’s where to find the best pharmacy in Newcastle.

How much does a prescription cost in Newcastle?

A routine prescription from the National Health Service (NHS) costs £9.90 per item unless you qualify for free exemptions. A prepayment certificate or a private consultation comes with its own fees.

OptionTypical price
Standard NHS prescription£9.90 per item
3-month prepayment certificate£32.05
12-month prepayment certificate£114.50
12-month hormone replacement therapy certificate£19.80
Free NHS prescriptions£0 (with valid age, medical or income exemptions)
Private dispensing fee£5 – £15 (plus medicine cost)
Private medications£10 – £200+

Address: 41-47 St George’s Terrace, Jesmond, NE2 2SX

Contact: 0191 281 6835

Hours: Monday-Saturday, 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Wasting a lunch break in a chemist queue is maddening, especially when your repeat prescription hasn’t arrived. Jesmond Pharmacy, an independent shop on St George’s Terrace, fixes that.

They text you the moment your order is ready, so you never make a wasted trip.

Their care goes beyond collections, too. They run the NHS New Medicine Service, which gives you private check-ins when you start a long-term tablet. These help you spot side effects early.

Health checks are easy to get. You can walk in for a free blood pressure check. If the reading looks high, they refer you on.

Advice is easy to get too. I once asked about high-altitude tablets for a trekking trip, and the pharmacist talked me through the options calmly in five minutes.

Just keep in mind that their free flu jabs are only for people over 65 or in a clinical risk group. The trip from West Newcastle is also a long one.

Pros

  • Free text alerts for ready prescriptions
  • Support through the New Medicine Service
  • Free walk-in blood pressure checks
  • Stocks altitude sickness travel treatments

Cons

  • Flu jabs aren’t free for everyone
  • Long trip from West Newcastle

Amazing Pharmacy!

Amazing Pharmacy! I went in to collect my dad’s medication and was so delighted to see an Endometriosis awareness stand. It was beautifully decorated and made the place and topic brighter. I have suffered from this condition for years and rarely see people talking about it. The lady called Leanne was a joy to speak with. She was full of knowledge and information. Thank you for a wonderful and helpful awareness event.

Can’t praise North East pharmacy highly enough

Absolutely brilliant service and I don’t hand out compliments freely. Not only is it quicker than going to a chemist, there’s no standing about waiting once you’re there will people coughing all over you. As I’m a busy worker this home delivery is top notch. Address: Unit 5, Middleton North, Wagonway Drive, Great Park, NE13 9BH

Contact: 0191 447 3839

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM

A painful sore throat or a sudden urinary tract infection usually means begging a receptionist for an urgent slot. Great Park Pharmacy & Clinic pairs NHS dispensing with private pharmacist consultations.

You can book directly for minor illnesses like impetigo or bad insect bites.

Regular medicines are covered too. You can ask for structured medication reviews, or an emergency supply if you run out of your usual tablets.

They also run a travel clinic out of their Wagonway Drive unit. They cover vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B and tick-borne encephalitis, plus malaria tablets. This lets you sort your jabs and tablets before you fly.

The clinic is quick, too. A friend of mine booked in for travel jabs before a backpacking trip. She got her vaccines and malaria tablets sorted in a single afternoon.

That said, their free delivery doesn’t run on Sundays. Getting there from South Newcastle is also a trek if you’d rather collect.

Pros

  • Pharmacist consultations for minor illnesses
  • Travel vaccines and malaria tablets
  • Emergency medication supply
  • Both NHS and private prescription services

Cons

  • No free delivery on Sundays
  • Long journey from South Newcastle

I would recommend it to everyone 😄

Their delivery service was recommended to me at the start of the pandemic and it’s such a good service, it takes the hassle and worry out of getting your prescription. Great Park Pharmacy are so much better than the pharmacies available in Kingston Park (where I live), I wish I had known about it sooner! Lovely staff and super quick service, I would recommend it to everyone 😄

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM | Saturday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Running out of an essential inhaler or blood pressure tablet right before the weekend can ruin your plans. Cockerton Pharmacy on Beaconsfield Street handles emergency dispensing, including out-of-hours and pandemic supply.

They also cover travel health and minor ailment care, so you aren’t left stranded.

If you’re starting a new prescription for a long-term issue, their pharmacists run the New Medicine Service. They check how you’re getting on and adjust your routine if needed.

Eligible patients can also pop in for an NHS blood pressure check while collecting NHS or private scripts. That saves a separate trip to the surgery.

Pros

  • Emergency and out-of-hours dispensing
  • Travel health and minor condition care
  • NHS blood pressure check service

Cons

Contact: 0191 266 6549

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM | Saturday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Why wait three weeks for a clinic appointment when a local chemist can sort everyday health niggles in half an hour?

Parkside Pharmacy is a family-run, independent business on Benton Road. They pair free NHS minor ailment care with a long menu of private treatments.

Their private clinic covers things people hate waiting around for. These include ear wax removal, weight management, hair loss and Vitamin B12 injections.

You can also get your winter flu jab, COVID booster and travel vaccinations in the same building. You can even collect your usual repeat tablets while you’re there.

Just keep in mind that their Saturday hours stop at midday, and they stay shut on Sundays.

It’s also easy to end up at the wrong branch, because the group runs several across Newcastle. Double-check the Benton Road address before you set off.

Pros

  • Free NHS minor ailment advice
  • Private ear wax removal and B12 injections
  • Weight management and hair loss clinics
  • Flu, COVID, and travel vaccinations

Cons

  • Closed Sundays and Saturday afternoons
  • Several branches can confuse patients

I’ve been going to this pharmacy for years and the current staff are brilliant.

I’ve been going to this pharmacy for years and the current staff are brilliant. The chemist is so helpful and the young ladies on the front desk are so friendly, nothing is too much bother for them and believe me, I’ve witnessed many awkward customers they had to deal with.

Also, they have a great selection of products on the shelves that are much cheaper than shops like Herons.
