5 Best Coffee Shops in Newcastle, UK for a Proper Good Cuppa

  • Bean Quality and Roasting: We looked for shops that care about where their coffee comes from and how it's roasted. Great spots use fresh, sustainably sourced beans that give you clear flavour notes rather than a burnt aftertaste.

  • Barista Skill and Drink Variety: A solid menu needs more than basic instant mixes. We favoured teams that pull consistent espresso shots and steam milk properly across cortados, flat whites, and iced drinks.

  • Food and Dietary Options: Coffee tastes better with a good bite to eat. We checked for scratch-made brunch plates, fresh local pastries, and reliable gluten-free choices for folks with food sensitivities.

  • Vibe and Seating: You need a space that fits your daily routine. We checked if these spots offer comfortable tables for remote workers, room for weekend social groups, or fast counter service for busy commuters.

  • Location and Hours: Convenience matters when you need a morning boost or a late afternoon pick-me-up. We noted how easy each shop is to reach and whether their weekend schedules actually work for locals.

Finding a cracking flat white on Tyneside shouldn’t require a caffeine-fuelled treasure hunt. Whether you’re racing to Central Station or dodging Newcastle’s drizzle, a good cuppa can save the day.

But the best coffee shop in Newcastle, UK, offers more than a fancy swirl of latte art. From speciality brews to buttery pastries, some cafés even give the city’s best restaurants a run for their money.

Of course, not every coffee spot deserves your hard-earned quid. We’ve rounded up local favourites worth getting out of bed for, even on a rainy Monday.

Customer Reviews

There was a lovely vibe in the coffee shop

There was a lovely vibe in the coffee shop-all the staff were friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble.

The clientele varied across the age groups and included family groups, young people working on laptops and lone diners.

By the time we left, there was quite a queue at the counter as it is obviously very popular.

Will definitely visit again when we are next in Newcastle.

The coffee is amazing (and reasonably priced)

Lovely little hidden treasure. Perfect place to meet friends or go on a date. The coffee is amazing (and reasonably priced), the atmosphere is calm and even when busy, it doesn’t feel overcrowded. The carrot cake was to die for. Definitely my favourite cafe in the city

I would recommend them for anyone who likes a great coffee.

I visited Newcastle, and I was very lucky to get to visit this place. It’s a great place to have a very good speciality coffee. I had a V60 coffee; it tasted amazing. The coffee beans were really nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a great conversation about the coffee. I used to drink speciality coffee always, and I would recommend them to anyone who likes great coffee.

The best place for speciality coffee in Newcastle.

The best place for speciality coffee in Newcastle. Always some interesting beans on for espresso-based drinks or filter. Particularly liked the Uganda and Rwanda beans in a cortado. Staff are always friendly, and the interior is very nice and comfortable. The sandwiches are also great for lunch.

3. Laneway & Co

laneway-co

Website

Address: 17–19 High Bridge

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Monday–Friday: 8 AM–4 PM; Saturday: 9 AM–5 PM; Sunday: 9 AM–4 PM

Laneway & Co has kept Newcastle’s High Bridge buzzing since 2016, and it’s not just the caffeine doing the heavy lifting.

With Allpress espresso and rotating speciality filter coffees, there’s plenty to tempt even the fussiest coffee lover.

But don’t let the beans steal all the attention! Its scratch-made kitchen serves seasonal brunch favourites, from Turkish eggs to smashed avocado on sourdough.

Better yet, weekday bookings are available for groups of five or more, making catch-ups easier to organise.

And come Friday and Saturday evenings, the café swaps brunch for small plates, cocktails, and wine until 10 PM!

The only snag is that weekend daytime dining is walk-in only, so securing a brunch table might require some patience. Plus, weekday café service ends at 4 PM, which isn’t ideal for late-afternoon caffeine cravings.

Pros

  • Allpress espresso and rotating speciality coffees
  • Scratch-made, seasonal brunch menu
  • Weekday group bookings available
  • Friday and Saturday evening dining until 10 PM
  • Central High Bridge location

Cons

  • Walk-in-only weekend brunch service
  • Weekday café service ends at 4 PM

Customer Reviews

Coffee was top-tier

Coffee was top-tier, reminded me of home in Melbourne!! Treated myself to two coffees both times I came here. Food also hit the spot, a good brunch menu. Couldn’t recommend it more 💯

The coffee and other drinks are always consistently really nice

I always enjoy coming here, but not as a big group, as it can be hard to find a seat when busy, as people work on laptops, etc. But the coffee and other drinks are always consistently really nice; they have oat, coconut, soy, and normal milk; they have a breakfast/ brunch menu and serve sandwiches which are all a little pricey but good; and they serve a range of cakes/ sweet treats – some of which are gluten-free and vegan.

4. One Kitchen & Social

Website

Address: 229–231 Jesmond Road, Cradlewell, Jesmond

Contact: 0191 281 9703

Hours: Monday–Sunday: 9 AM–5 PM

Who says going gluten-free means settling for a sad little brownie?

One Kitchen & Social keeps things delicious with its in-house gluten-free cakes and a generous menu that goes well beyond sweet treats.

We like that breakfast runs until 3 PM, so late risers can enjoy a proper morning feast without watching the clock. With vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options, there’s something to keep everyone at the table happy.

Fancy a cuppa after stretching your legs? Its spot near Jesmond Dene makes it a handy pit stop, especially since four-legged companions can tag along.

And there’s more to love than the food. The café sources ingredients and coffee from independent suppliers, giving your visit a lovely local touch.

Mind the clock, though, as doors don’t open until 9 AM. The 5 PM closing time means evening coffee dates are off the cards, too.

Pros

  • In-house gluten-free cakes
  • Extensive gluten-free food menu
  • Vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options
  • Breakfast served until 3 PM
  • Locally sourced ingredients and coffee
  • Dog-friendly, near Jesmond Dene

Cons

  • Late morning opening (9 AM)
  • Closes at 5 PM daily

Customer Reviews

One of our favourite places for casual coffee with friends.

One of our favourite places for casual coffee with friends. We usually go here during the weekend, and it’s pretty busy, but there’s fast turnover, so you don’t usually have to wait more than 10-15 minutes to get seated. The food is always on point with ingredients from local suppliers like Block & Bottle and Graze, which guarantee it’s top quality. It’s also dog-friendly, which is nice and convenient for us! Highly recommended!

Definitely will be returning.

The waitress is super friendly and made me feel at home right away.

I ordered a deluxe hot chocolate with a shot of hazelnut, and it was delicious. There were plenty of meal and drink options; pricing is average for a coffee shop.

The atmosphere was very chilled, and there were plenty of different seats to choose from, be it a booth/bench, table or barstool.

Definitely will be returning.

5. Sands of Tyne

sands-of-tyne

Website

Address: 12 Forest Hall Road, Forest Hall

Contact: 0191 447 0780

Hours: Monday–Wednesday: 8 AM–5:30 PM; Thursday: 8 AM–8 PM; Friday: 8 AM–10 PM; Saturday: 9 AM–10 PM; Sunday: 9 AM–8 PM

Why choose between a caffeine fix and an evening tipple when you can have both?

Sands of Tyne in Forest Hall serves daytime coffee before switching gears to evening drinks, keeping the good times brewing.

Its bar offers craft beers, including locally brewed favourites, for those ready to swap flat whites for pints. With doors open until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, there’s no need to rush your catch-up.

We love that dogs are welcome, while a little book exchange adds extra charm for anyone who fancies reading over a cuppa.

And if you’re hunting for a present, their gift cards make a handy treat for fellow coffee lovers. It’s a thoughtful alternative to yet another pair of socks.

A couple of things to bear in mind, though: outdoor seating is limited, especially for larger groups. Same-day table bookings also require a phone call, so last-minute planners can’t sort everything online.

Pros

  • Coffee shop and evening bar in one
  • Craft beers, including local brews
  • Open until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Dog-friendly atmosphere
  • In-house book exchange
  • Gift cards available

Cons

  • Limited outdoor seating
  • Phone-only same-day bookings

Customer Reviews

The coffee was great quality and really reasonably priced.

Swung by here on a cold morning for a takeaway coffee. The coffee was great quality and really reasonably priced. I didn’t sit in, but the cafe was really clean and looked welcoming enough with plenty of seating and local artwork. The food offerings looked great too, but I’d just had breakfast. I’ll definitely be back.

Nice little coffee shop!

Nice little coffee shop! Have been in here a few times whilst getting repairs done to my bike along the road. Great tasting coffee, it’s quite cosy inside so you won’t always be able to get a seat at certain times of the day.
